Parce Domine - Catholic Lenten Lament
This particular type of hymn is a lenten lament, a hymn of sorrow and mourning for lent. In the Traditional Mass, this is a hymn that is sung often during the ablutions in lent.
The lyrics are derived from Joel 2:17, where the priests are instructed to weep between the porch and the altar, asking God to spare the people and not to make His heritage a reproach.
"Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O Lord, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?"
The priests of the Old Testament served as intercessors between God and Israel, and their act of weeping served as a form of intercessory prayer that served to attempt to satisfy God's divine justice, and not bring destruction upon Israel for their sins. This is of course a prefiguration for Christ's passion and sacrifice, the ultimate intercession.
There is two direct parallels to the priests weeping in Joel: Jesus weeping over Jerusalem (Luke 19:41-44), where the laments the future destruction of Jerusalem; and the prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-46), where, according to Catholic tradition, He saw all the sins of humanity individually, and still decided to forgive them.
Jesus' prayer was: "My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from me. Nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt." Which directly echoes the prayers from the priests, for Christ is the ultimate High Priest (Hebrews 4:14-16), who not only intercedes on behalf of humanity but also offers himself as a perfect sacrifice for sin, thus not only surpassing the Old Testament priesthood, but fulfilling and transcending it.
Lyrics:
Parce Domine, Parce populo tuo,
ne in aeternum irascaris nobis.
Flectamus iram vindicem,
Ploremus ante Judicem;
Clamemus ore supplici,
Dicamus omnes cernui:
Parce Domine, populo tuo,
ne in aeternum irascaris nobis.
Nostris malis offendimus
Tuam Deus clementiam
Effunde nobis desuper
Remissor indulgentiam.
Parce Domine, populo tuo,
ne in aeternum irascaris nobis.
Dans tempus acceptabile,
Da lacrimarum rivulis
Lavare cordis victimam,
Quam laeta adurat caritas.
Parce Domine, populo tuo,
ne in aeternum irascaris nobis.
Audi, benigne Conditor,
Nostras preces cum fletibus
In hoc sacro jejunio,
Fusas quadragenario.
Parce Domine, populo tuo,
ne in aeternum irascaris nobis.

Searlas Óg - Irish Jacobite Song
Переглядів 32 тис.4 місяці тому
This song was written around the time of the Third Jacobite Rising, the last major Jacobite rising where Prince Charles Stuart tried to reclaim the throne for his father, James. It is sung from the point of view of a woman (possibly Ireland herself) who welcomes her sweetheart after a long time without seeing him. It alludes to the fact that Charles, despite being defeated in Scotland, still en...
Entrada de los Reyes en Granada - Joaquín Díaz

On this day, 532 years ago, the Reconquista came to an end when the Moor surrendered Granada to the Catholic Kings. This event marked the end of the wars for the Iberian peninsula, which began when the Saracens took over the failing Visigothic Kingdom, leaving only the rugged mountainous north under Visigothic control. After almost a millenium of fighting, the tide was turned and Iberia was ret...

I wanted to post this after the joyous 25th, hence why it was the first year with no posts on Christmas Day. I wanted to focus on the fact that Christ suffered from the day He was born for me and for you. And we must remember that He will come a second time for us and for the entire universe. Merry Christmas, everyone, and happy new year. May God bless this new year. Remember to confess and str...

2270. Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person - among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life. Lyrics: Ciao bambino, piccolo uomo, forse no, sei solo poche cellule. Non sei bello in quel sacco d'immondizia, ma che vuoi, c'è ...

This one is performed by Eduardo Paniagua, and is one of the "Cantigas de Santa Maria", a set of songs composed in galician-portuguese by king Alfonso X the Wise. It tells the pious legend of when the Virgin Mary came down from Heaven to help in the defense of Constantinople, which was then being besieged by the Arabs. Lyrics: Esta é como Santa Maria deffendeu Costantinobre dos mouros que a con...
Cold Iron

This one is from a poem by Rudyard Kipling. It tells the story of a baron who believes iron - for him, representative of brute force - as the metal of man. He tries to revolt against his king by might alone, and is defeated and humiliated. His king offers him clemency, but the baron refuses, adamant in his belief that might alone makes right. The king then shows himself to be Jesus Christ, and ...

Since my previous channel was shut down, I have been trying to avoid political speech in my videos and left the niche for the thousands of copycats that have popped in my absence. But this video is a tribute, or rather a warning, to the current situation, especially in Spain, which is now obstinate on destroying its past. José Antonio Primo de Rivera, the greatest spaniard of the last century, ...

This song is originally a poem, written by János Debreceni Szappanos in a book he gifted to Stephen Bocskay, ruler of Transylvania. The book sings military praises about Stephen, hence why the song's name. It is written in the form of a prayer, and calls the Hungarians to defend their land from the invading Turkish armies, during the height of Ottoman power in the area. Lyrics, as sung by @Aran...

Enjoy the regular uploads while my vacations last, and please don't forget the channel afterwards. This is a ballad by Bálint Balassi, or Balassi Bálint in Hungarian, written in the 1500s. It was written in form of a prayer, as Balassi is known as one of the greatest religious poets in the Hungarian language to date. We remember the brave Hungarians who fought to stop the Turkish onslaught. PLE...

Happy new year! This song celebrates the battle of Albulena an ambush by the League of Lezhë led by George Kastrioti, also known as Skanderbeg. The battle happened in the eponymous city, and saw Skanderbeg fighting against his own nephew Hamza, who had switched sides and converted to islam a few years prior, and Ottoman commander Isak Bey Evrenoz. This song, also called "O Come, All Ye Faithful" and the "Portuguese Hymn", is a Christmas carol written by either Cistercian monks, King Aphonso the Brave, King John IV of Portugal, or Jacobite loyalist John Wade. Due to the fact it is often attributed to John Wade in the anglophone world, this song was historically also regarded as a Jacobite song, with several Jacobite codewords having been ...
Imperator Rex Grecorum - Crusader Song

This song, taken from the Carmina Burana and performed by Estampie, talks about the invasions of Egypt by King Amalric of Jerusalem, with Byzantine support. By the 12th century, the Schism wasn't yet cemented, and alliances between West and East were not as rare as one might think. In this context Byzantine Emperor Manuel I Comnenus fostered a friendly attitude towards the latin West, and espec...

Personally, I would rather wear the Papal Tiara than the Turkish Turban. That Turban looks too ridiculous for me compared to the beautiful Tiara. Even if I'm a man.
Chevaliers, Mult Estes Guariz is a medieval song composed for King Louis VII and his knights upon the announcement of the outbreak of the Second Crusade in 1145. Therefore, before Saint- Louis (Louis IX) but both went on crusades. Thank you for sharing this song. 🥰
